Market and events hall at heart of Oldham’s town centre regeneration

RW Joinery were appointed by Willmott Dixon to deliver a wide range of traditional and specialist joinery works on the third phase of the new Spindles Market and Events Hall.

Located within the Spindles Shopping Centre on Parliament Square, the project has reimagined the ground and first floors as the new home for Tommyfield Market, relocated from its former site. Alongside the market are new events spaces designed to host community and commercial functions.

Part-funded by the government’s £24.5m Towns Fund, the development is part of Oldham Council’s wider strategy to revitalise the shopping centre, increase footfall and bring together traditional market culture with modern retail and civic use.

Scope of Works

RW Joinery was contracted to manufacture, supply and install the extensive joinery package on the scheme which included:

  • Oak veneered timber window boards, stair stringers and skirting boards.
  • Oak T&G feature wall panelling.
  • Oak capping to both the feature and bleacher stair areas, along with capping to mezzanine edges.
  • Black Ash Laminate faced FD30 and FD60 rated doorsets, factory finished painted fire doors and none-fire rated doors and associated ironmongery.

RW Joinery Approach

Throughout the project, RW Joinery’s Install Team worked closely with Willmott Dixon and other subcontractors, attending daily site coordination meetings and weekly collaborative planning sessions to manage sequencing of the build and tracking of the programme. This collaborative, proactive approach helped maintain quality throughout and mitigate delays.

To support compliance and traceability, we used our Field View system (a digital site management portal) to capture and record Quality Assurance of all our works. One key aspect of the Field View system is monitoring and recording the installation of fire rated door sets, which forms an integral part of our BM TRADA Q-Mark certification.

Outcome

The completed space delivered a successful balance of function, visual impact and fire safety.

Feedback from Willmott Dixon was highly positive, with senior members of the site team expressing their enthusiasm in working with RW Joinery again on future schemes.
