What is Fire Door Safety Week?

For over a decade, the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has run the annual Fire Door Safety Week campaign to highlight the role of fire doors in maintaining fire safety.

Fire safety risks change every year, so it’s important to make sure your fire safety strategy and vital infrastructure like fire doors are all up to date. For example, this year’s research from the BWF has focused on the increased risk of lithium-ion battery fires over the last few years.

Fire Door Safety Week is an opportunity for businesses to inform themselves about current fire risks and ensure they have safe, compliant doors that meet their sector’s needs.

What role do fire doors play in fire safety?

The key function of a fire door is to contain a fire in a ‘compartment’ if one breaks out. This keeps the fire and smoke trapped in a designated area, which makes the fire easier to put out and provides invaluable time for evacuations. However, your fire door will not contain a fire properly if it is damaged or otherwise non-compliant.

No matter what sector you work in, your fire doors need regular inspections to check they are up to standard.

Why different facilities need different doors

Fire safety legislation varies between sectors so always check the specific requirements for the fire doors in your building. There are some other sector-specific needs to consider for your fire doors too, such as anti-ligature safety features if the doors are being fitted in a hospital. High-footfall facilities like hospitals and schools also need fire doors that withstand heavy use day in, day out.

While fire safety regulations often designate a specific Responsible Person to maintain a certain building’s fire safety strategy, everyone can play their part in keeping their workplace safe.
